Measure length and width with a tape along the floor, and the height from floor to ceiling. Wall area = perimeter × height, then subtract windows and doors. If the walls differ in length, measure each one separately and add them up.

When trimming near walls, corners and openings some material is lost as offcuts, plus factory defects happen. A typical reserve is 5–15%, more for diagonal layouts. Better to buy a little extra from one batch than to hunt for the same shade later.

A batch (batch/lot on the pack) is material from a single production run. Different batches of tile, wallpaper or paint can differ slightly in shade, and it shows on the wall. Buy the whole quantity you need from one batch at once.

The calculator gives an estimate close to reality based on standard consumption rates. Verify the final figures against the specific material instructions: consumption depends on the substrate, the tool and the craftsman.

Different sellers use different reserves and consumption rates. Our calculation shows the whole formula — compare the input figures: area, layer thickness, reserve percentage. Most often the difference is in the reserve.
